The country is facing a labor shortage as the Baby Boomer population retires and the Mankato-North Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area (Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties) is no different. To provide insight on strategies to address this shortage, Greater Mankato Growth conducted a national comparison of Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) and analyzed workforce engagement. The unique labor force characteristics of our MSA can show areas for improvement and opportunity for enhanced engagement with our diverse populations.
The Mankato-North Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area (Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties) have very unique attributes in our workforce. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, we rank 364 out of 381 MSAs in the country in terms of percent of workers 16-64 year who worked full-time, year round.
Facing my last semester as a senior (second year) in college I was facing thee question, what next? Time for reality, a full-time “grown-up” job was hopefully coming my way very, very soon. But how was I going to find it? For an anthropology major I maybe should have dissected the career opportunities and employment potential a little further, but none-the-less I was determined to land a job as, get this – an archeologist.
Last Wednesday 43 participants graduated from Greater Mankato Growth’s Leadership Institute. Each year a graduation dinner is held on the last day to honor the participants’ hard work and dedication to the nine-month program. One of my favorite parts of this event is when class members volunteer to speak about their experiences and observations. One class member, Elisabeth Moat, Manager of the Mankato AmericInn presented a very eloquent and heart-felt testimonial about her experience and agreed to share it on this blog. Are you a new or existing businesses in Greater Minnesota? Will you be adding at least three new jobs? Do you need to provide training to those new employees? If so, then you’ll want to consider applying for a state grant from the new Job Training Incentive Program administered by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The program provides grants of up to $100,000 that eligible businesses can use to train workers in new jobs.
This past week we celebrated our 200th Greater Mankato Young Professionals (YPs) member. In fact, today we reached our 204th YP member and the numbers just keep climbing. Why is this important to members of Greater Mankato Growth and to our community as a whole? It’s important because the growth in the YPs is not just a number — it’s indicative of the energy and excitement that is growing among those who have recently entered our workforce and have chosen to live and work here.
