Earlier today at a news conference the 2016 Pathfinder Award Recipients were announced. I have had the honor to assist in a small portion of the process and each year walk away amazed and energized from the kind, brave and deliberate souls that reside across Greater Mankato. There are many, too many to ever name, honor and rise up. But today, two individuals and one business got a little spotlight for their large hearts and good deeds. We’re all are facing a talent shortage now or will be in the very near future. And we’re all looking for answers. An article published by Enterprise Minnesota focused on what innovative strategies manufacturers can undertake to address this need but frankly the solutions offered could fit into any business. It’s a worthwhile read.
2015 would be a tough year to top in terms of capital investment. There were some landmark private sector projects that brought in new businesses to our community: The Wal-Mart Distribution Center (yes we have a Wal-Mart and a Sam’s Club already but this is a bit different), the Tailwind Group projects (Profinium & Ridley), Mills Fleet Farm and new warehouses. There were expansions of existing primary sector companies such as Fed Ex, D&K Powder Coating, Spee-Dee Delivery, and Creative Company. I’m missing several more of equal importance but I don’t want to turn this blog into a rambling list. To summarize, 2015 was the convergence of many planning processes that started years ago and all came to fruition in the same calendar year.
Congress is ending 2015 by passing a flurry of legislation that will have substantial impacts on businesses and individuals alike. Included is the first long-term transportation bill in a decade, a major education reform bill, a tax bill that extends numerous tax breaks, and a spending bill that will fund the government over the next year.
